iPad with a cracked screen or touch not responding: what's repairable and what isn't

Almost everything that happens to an iPad screen is repairable: cracked glass, unresponsive touch, dead zones or lines on the display. The three layers of an iPad screen

To understand what your iPad needs, you have to know the screen has three parts:

1. The glass: the outer layer, the one that shatters in a drop.
2. The digitizer: the touch layer, bonded to the glass. It's what detects your fingers.
3. The LCD: the display itself, the one that shows the image. It sits underneath, separate from the glass on most models.

On many iPads the glass and digitizer come together as one part, and the LCD is another. That's an advantage: if the glass breaks but the image looks perfect, usually only the glass + digitizer assembly needs replacing, not the whole display.

What's wrong with your iPad based on the symptom

Cracked glass, but the image looks fine and touch works

The most common case and the simplest. The glass + digitizer assembly is replaced and the iPad is as good as new. You can keep using it in the meantime, but carefully: loose glass cuts, and dust gets into the LCD.

Touch not responding or dead zones

If the image looks fine but there are areas where your finger does nothing, or the iPad "taps on its own," the digitizer is damaged. Sometimes without the glass being cracked (it happens after a drop or liquid damage). The glass + digitizer assembly is replaced.

Lines, dark blotches or a black screen

If you see colored lines, a dark spot that keeps growing, or no image at all even though the iPad makes sound, the damage is in the LCD. In that case the LCD is replaced, and if the glass broke too, both parts.

The iPad turns on but the screen looks very dim

It could be the backlight circuit on the board, not the screen. We handle that at our advanced repairs bench with microsoldering.
