Your phone fell in water: what to do in the first minutes

If your phone fell in water, turn it off immediately, don't plug it into a charger and don't put it in rice. Dry the outside, remove the case and SIM, and bring it in as soon as possible for a board cleaning. The sooner corrosion is cleaned off, the better the odds of saving the phone and your data.

In Puerto Rico we live between the beach, the pool, the rain and the heat, and at the Fix On Wheels kiosk in Plaza Carolina Mall we see wet phones every week. What you do in the first minutes after the accident completely changes the odds of saving it. Here's the straight guide, no myths.

What you should do, in order

1. Get it out of the water and turn it off now. If it stays on, electricity flowing through a wet board is what causes the short circuit. Turning it off is the single most important thing you can do.
2. Remove the case, the SIM and any accessories. Water pools there and keeps seeping into the device.
3. Dry the outside with a cloth or towel, without shaking it hard (moving the water around inside spreads it).
4. Keep it off and bring it in as soon as possible. No home trick replaces a board cleaning.

What you should not do (even if someone told you to)

• Don't put it in rice. It's the most widespread myth. Rice doesn't pull out the water that already reached the board, and while the phone "rests," corrosion keeps eating away at components. Rice dust also gets into the port.
• Don't plug it into a charger "to see if it turns on." It's the fastest way to burn something that could have been saved.
• Don't keep turning it on to test it. Every attempt with a damp board is a risk.
• Don't use a hair dryer or leave it in the sun. Heat pushes moisture deeper and damages the battery and screen.

Why timing matters so much

Water alone doesn't kill a phone on the spot. What kills it is corrosion: the minerals in water (worse with salt water, chlorine or soap) react with the metal on the board and build up a layer that interrupts the circuits. That process starts within hours and keeps going for days.

That's why a phone that "worked fine" after getting wet sometimes fails a week later. The corrosion reached a critical component. If you bring it in early, we do a board cleaning that stops the process before it does permanent damage.

How we treat a wet phone at Fix On Wheels

1. Diagnostic. We open the device and inspect the board. If the phone powers on, the diagnostic is free; if it doesn't, it has a fee that is fully credited toward your repair.
2. Board cleaning. We remove moisture and corrosion with ultrasonic cleaning. It's part of our phone repair service.
3. Replacing what's damaged. If the liquid burned components, they go to advanced repairs, where we replace them with microsoldering. Many devices others write off come out of there working.
4. Testing with you. Charging, signal, cameras, audio and screen, before we hand it back.

"But my phone is water resistant"

The water resistance manufacturers advertise is measured in lab conditions, with fresh water and a brand-new device. Over time, the seals degrade from drops, heat and wear. And it doesn't cover salt water, chlorine, soap or drinks. If liquid got in and you notice anything odd (speaker sounding muffled, foggy camera, charging issues), bring it in anyway.
