My phone won't charge: when it's the port and when it's something else

If your phone won't charge, the most common cause is the charging port: dirty, loose or damaged. But it can also be the cable, the battery or the charging IC on the logic board. The difference matters, because a port is replaced in under 1 hour while the IC requires microsoldering.

If your phone won't charge, the most common cause is the charging port: dirty, loose or damaged. But it can also be the cable, the battery or the charging IC on the logic board. The difference matters, because a port is replaced in under 1 hour while the IC requires microsoldering.

"It won't charge" is one of the most common complaints we get at the Fix On Wheels kiosk in Plaza Carolina Mall, and it almost always comes with the same question: "is it serious?" The good news is that most of the time it isn't. The bad news is that if you guess wrong, you can spend money on a new charger when the problem was the port, or replace the port when the problem was on the board. Here's how to tell each case apart.

Rule out the easy stuff first: the cable and the charger

Before thinking about a repair, run these three tests:

  1. Swap the cable and the brick. Use ones you know work with another phone. Cheap cables break internally without any visible sign.
  2. Try a different outlet. Sounds obvious, but it happens more than you'd think.
  3. Look into the port with a light. If you see lint, sand or packed residue at the bottom, that's probably your problem.

If the phone still won't charge with a different cable, brick and outlet, the problem is in the device. That's where we come in.

When it's the charging port

The charging port is the part that takes the most abuse in a phone: it gets plugged and unplugged several times a day, collects pocket lint and moves every time you use the phone while it's charging. The signs of a damaged port are clear:

  • The cable falls out on its own or you have to hold it at a specific angle to get it to charge.
  • It charges intermittently: connects and disconnects even when you don't touch it.
  • It charges slowly even with the original charger.
  • Your computer doesn't recognize it when you plug it in over USB.

Charging port replacement is one of our express repairs: on most models it's ready in under 1 hour while you shop at the mall. It's part of our phone repair service.

When it's just dirt

Sometimes the port is fine and the only issue is packed lint at the bottom that keeps the cable from seating fully. We check that during the free diagnostic, and if it's just a cleaning, we tell you straight.

When it's the battery

If the phone "charges" but the percentage climbs very slowly, it shuts off with charge still left or the back cover is lifting, the problem may be the battery rather than the port. A battery at the end of its life doesn't take a charge well. We explain it in detail in swollen battery or short battery life: when to replace it.

When it's the charging IC (and why a new port isn't enough)

This is the case that confuses a lot of shops. The phone won't charge, they replace the port, and it still won't charge. The culprit is the charging IC, a chip on the logic board (known as Tristar or U2 on iPhones) that decides how much current goes into the device.

The typical signs:

  • The phone won't charge with any cable or charger, and the port is clean and firm.
  • The port was already replaced and nothing changed.
  • It only charges when powered off, or gets hot when plugged in.
  • It stopped charging after using a generic charger or a power surge.

That chip can't be swapped with a screwdriver: it's replaced under a microscope with microsoldering at our advanced repairs bench. It's the kind of work that brings many customers from Carolina and the metro area to us after being told somewhere else that it's "beyond repair."

How we diagnose it at Fix On Wheels

We don't guess. When you come to the kiosk:

  1. We test with our own cables and chargers to rule out the accessory.
  2. We inspect the port under magnification and measure whether it's receiving current.
  3. If the port is fine, we measure the board to confirm whether it's the IC.
  4. We give you the diagnosis and the price before starting. We never start a job until you approve the price.

The diagnostic is free on any device that powers on. If it won't turn on, the diagnostic has a fee that is fully credited toward your repair.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if it's the cable or the phone?

Try a different cable and charger that you know work. If the phone still won't charge with them, the problem is in the phone, not the accessory.

How long does a charging port replacement take?

Charging port replacement is one of our express repairs: it's usually ready in under 1 hour at Plaza Carolina Mall.

What is the charging IC?

It's a chip on the logic board (known as Tristar or U2 on iPhones) that controls charging. When it fails, the phone won't charge even after the port and cable are replaced. It's replaced through microsoldering.

Can I clean the port myself?

You can blow into it gently, but avoid metal objects or liquids. If the lint is packed in, it's better to let us clean it with the right tool so the pins don't get damaged.

Is there a diagnostic fee?

The diagnostic is free on any device that powers on. If your device won't turn on, the diagnostic has a fee that is fully credited toward your repair.
